FAQs – Liver Transplantation
What is the procedure for undergoing a liver transplant?
The journey starts with a consultation, during which the transplant specialist will assess your liver condition, determine eligibility, and provide detailed counseling. If deemed suitable, a donor is needed—either a living related donor or a cadaveric donor (from a brain-dead patient whose family consents to organ donation). However, cadaveric donors are rare in India, making living donations more common.
Who can be a liver donor?
A living donor must:
-
Be a close relative
-
Be 18–55 years old
-
Have a compatible blood group
-
Weigh between 50–90 kg and be in good health
What is the success rate of liver transplants?
At established centers like Max, liver transplants have a success rate of over 90%, especially when performed before the patient becomes critically ill. Most recipients go on to live normal, healthy lives post-surgery.
How long does the surgery take?
Liver transplant surgery typically lasts between 4 to 14 hours. It involves:
-
Removal of the diseased liver
-
Implantation and reconnection of the donor liver
-
Temporary use of tubes to support vital functions during and after the operation
What are the common complications?
The two most frequent risks are:
-
Rejection of the new liver by the immune system
-
Infection, due to immunosuppressive medications
Both are manageable with close monitoring and treatment.
Can I resume daily activities after a liver transplant?
Absolutely. Most patients return to a normal daily life after recovery.
-
Work: Most resume work within a few months
-
Diet: A healthy, low-fat, low-salt diet is recommended
-
Exercise: Physical activity is encouraged post-recovery
-
Sexual activity: Typically resumes post-transplant. Women are advised to avoid pregnancy for at least one year after surgery
